question and answer
CPAP for a nap?
November 2008
Should people with sleep apnea who are on CPAP overnight also use the CPAP machine for naps during the day? ROBERT FINGEROTE, MD, Thornhill, ON
Yes, they should, as the reason for using CPAP is to prevent hypoxia during sleep — any sleep. Hypoxia can lead to significant adverse effects such as pulmonary hypertension, arrhythmias, erythrocytosis, cognitive difficulties, and others. The risk is the same for daytime naps as for sleep at night, so a CPAP machine should be used at all times.
