BREAST CANCER: NO POLIO VACCINE LINK
September 1999
J.T. SIMPSON, MD, of St. Jacob's, ON, observes: "I've had several women in their 50s expressing regret that they'd received polio immunizations in the 1950s, since they've heard that there's a causative relationship between breast cancer and the earlier vaccine." Dr. Simpson adds, "I've heard of no such correlation. Is there anything to this?"
I'm not aware of any reports of increased risk of breast cancer following polio immunizations. Such an association seems implausible and I'd discount the possibility unless presented with a well-done observational study showing a link between polio vaccine and breast cancer.
